The temple of Chintala
Tiruvengalanatha Swami or Chintala
Venkataramana Swami is named after the idol of Lord Vishnu, which is believed
to have emerged from a tamarind tree. It was constructed during the reign of Pemmasani
Thimma Naidu and Erra Thimma Naidu, another chief, spent large sums of money in
beautifying the ceiling of the temple with paintings.
This temple is built purely as per
Silpa Sastra . The temple is known for its massive and beautiful structure built
of stone and bricks. There are carvings on the stone with fine figures of
Vidhyadharas , Apsaras and Avataras in rows elegantly arranged. There are
delicately designed pieces of beautiful sculptures and carvings, some showing
the procession of elephants and horses. One of the masterpieces is the stone
chariot artistically designed such that twice a year the sun s rays directly
reflect through the holes carved in the chariot and touch the feet of the
deity. In the Ranga Mandapa , there are forty pillars carved in Vijayanagar
style, the southern and western walls of the temple have the scenes from
Ramayana and Bhagavad-Gita.
The main gopuram is facing east and
is a solid huge structure built of stone and partly of bricks. The temple is a
perfect specimen of Vijayanagaran art.
